Site Accessibility

Disability and Health Data System (DHDS) was created following a user-centered design (UCD) process. UCD is an approach for creating and evaluating a website that focuses on users, user needs, and usability. User input collected throughout the development of DHDS helped inform the content, data organization, interactive map functionality, and profile development.

Additionally, the DHDS team strove to consider the needs of users with disabilities who access websites using assistive technologies. DHDS incorporates several features that are intended to provide the best experience possible for these users:

  • High contrast interactive maps
  • Customizable HTML data tables
  • Downloadable data tables
  • Additional skip links
  • Contrasting focus rectangle
  • Access keys and shortcuts

Access Keys

Access keys are keyboard shortcuts which allow you to navigate this web site without using a mouse. The keys available in DHDS are:

To use these keys:

  • In Internet Explorer 5+:
Holding 'Alt' and the access key will 'focus' the page element. If the element is a link (it normally is), hitting the 'Enter' key will then take you to the link's destination.
  • In Mozilla Firefox:
Holding 'Alt' and 'Shift' and the access key will take you to the link's destination.
  • On Apple Mac systems:
Use the 'Ctrl' key instead of the 'Alt' key.
